2) For searches aiming to unearth possible alternatives to a particular experiment, a form with personal data and data about the experiment (field, kind of alternative sought, animal species) must be filled in. The database will then select all alternatives which comply with the search criteria, and provide technical specifications and the manufacturer's website and/or contact information for further enquiries or purchases.

This database contains about 900 alternatives for over 200 animal species and is continuously updated. We ask users and manufacturers to alert us to any alternatives not yet included, as well as any changes in existing ones. Several items can be selected at once: for examples, when searching for alternatives to an experiment on cats, methods specific to this species can be selected at the same time as nonspefic ones, for example alternatives to the use of "domestic animals". (For ease of use the most widespread non-specific alternatives are listed right at the beginning of the species list, which then goes on in alphabetical order)
Especially for human medicine and surgery, in any field where animals are used as substitutes for humans we recommend selecting "Human" as well as the target animal species. For instance, in surgical training, in order to find out about alternatives to a test involving pigs we recommend selecting both "Pig" and "Human".
